چکیده

We present measurements of the wavelength dependence of the aerosol absorption coefficient taken during the TARFOX experiment over the Northern Atlantic. The data show an approximate λ variation between 0.40 μm and 1.0 μm. We explore the theoretical basis of the wavelength variation of the absorption of solar radiation by elemental carbon (or black carbon, BC). For a wavelength independent refractive index the small particle absorption limit simplifies to a λ -1 variation in relatively good agreement with the data. This result implies that the refractive indices of BC were relatively constant in this wavelength region, in agreement with much of the data on refractive indices of BC. However, the result does not indicate the magnitude of the refractive indices. We discuss the implications of the wavelength dependence of BC absorption for the spectral behavior of the aerosol single scattering albedo. We show that the single scattering albedo for a mixture of BC and non-absorbing material decreases with wavelength in the solar spectrum (i.e., the percentage amount of absorption increases). This decease in the single scattering albedo with wavelength for black carbon mixtures is different from the increase in single scattering albedo for most mineral aerosols (dusts). This indicates that if generally true the spectral variation of the single scattering albedo can be used to distinguish aerosol types. It also highlights the importance of measurements of the spectral variation of the aerosol absorption coefficient and single scattering albedo.

This paper presents estimates of the spectral solar absorption due to atmospheric aerosols during the 2006 MILAGRO/INTEX-B (Megacity Initiative-Local And Global Research Observations/Phase B of the Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment) field campaign. The aerosol absorption was derived from measurements of the spectral solar radiation and the spectral aerosol optical depth made on the...

Effect of carbon black content on the microwave absorbing properties of CB/epoxy composites

To prevent serious electromagnetic interference, a single-layer and double layer wave-absorbing coating employing complex absorbents composed of carbon black with epoxy resin as matrix was prepared. The morphologies of carbon black /epoxy composites were characterized by scanning electron microscope  and atomic force microscope, respectively. The carbon black  particles exhibit obvious polyarom...

Attribution of aerosol light absorption to black carbon, brown carbon, and dust in China – interpretations of atmospheric measurements during EAST-AIRE

Black carbon, brown carbon, and mineral dust are three of the most important light absorbing aerosols. Their optical properties differ greatly and are distinctive functions of the wavelength of light. Most optical instruments that quantify light absorption, however , are unable to distinguish one type of absorbing aerosol from another. It is thus 5 instructive to separate total absorption from ...

Estimation of the Single Scattering Albedo from the Data on the Content of Submicron Aerosol, Absorbing Substance, and the Parameter of Condensation Activity In a Local Volume

Regional models that describe the spatial-temporal variability of atmospheric aerosol parameters are necessary to solve many radiative and climatic problems. An important area of study is the content of the main absorbing substance, soot (black carbon), in aerosol particles. Soot determines the nonselective absorption of radiation in the visible wavelength range by aerosol. It is an important r...

Aerosol optical properties in a rural environment near the mega-city Guangzhou, China: implications for regional air pollution, radiative forcing and remote sensing

The scattering and absorption of solar radiation by atmospheric aerosols is a key element of the Earth’s radiative energy balance and climate. The optical properties of aerosol particles are, however, highly variable and not well characterized, especially near newly emerging mega-cities. In this study, aerosol optical properties were measured at a rural site approximately 60 km northwest of the...
